Making slides used to take hours. With AI, you can go from topic to a clean, finished presentation in about 10 minutes. Here is a simple workflow using free tools: an AI assistant for the content and an AI slide maker for the design.

What you need

  • An AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, to plan and write the content
  • An AI slide tool such as Gamma or Canva, to turn it into designed slides

Both Gamma and Canva have free plans. Check their sites for current limits.

Step 1: Plan the story (2 minutes)

Good slides start with a clear outline, not design. Ask your AI assistant:

I need a 10-slide presentation on [topic] for [audience], lasting [X] minutes. My main message is [one sentence]. Create an outline with a title and 3 short bullet points per slide, plus a strong opening and a clear closing slide.

Read the outline and fix anything that is wrong or missing. You know your topic and audience better than the AI.

Step 2: Generate the slides (3 minutes)

With Gamma: choose to create a presentation, paste your outline, pick a theme, and Gamma builds the slides with layouts and images.

With Canva: use its AI presentation feature or pick a template, then paste each slide's content in.

Step 3: Edit and polish (5 minutes)

  1. Cut the words. Slides should have short phrases, not paragraphs. Put details in your speaker notes.
  2. One idea per slide. Split crowded slides.
  3. Check every fact and number. AI can invent statistics.
  4. Replace generic images with your own photos or charts where possible.
  5. Keep fonts and colors consistent.

Bonus: speaker notes in seconds

Paste your final slide text into your AI assistant and ask: "Write short speaker notes for each slide, about 30 seconds each, in a natural speaking style." Then practise out loud once or twice.

Tips for a better presentation

  • Open with a question, a surprising fact or a short story.
  • Use a chart instead of a table of numbers.
  • End with one clear takeaway or next step.
  • For school, check whether your teacher allows AI tools and mention how you used them.
